Why we're obsessed with DIY Escape Rooms

We started making escape rooms for each other to play at home, and now we've designed over 100!

Before MysteryLocks was even an idea, we discovered escape room games in all possible formats. When we ran out of games to play, we started creating our own.

Solving escape room puzzles using things we found around the house, we had hours of fun! So we want you to feel the same thrill without leaving your home.

I never played a real Escape Room. Will I be able to play?

You don't need any prior experience to play an escape room at home.

Each game includes instructions and answer sheets, as well as an intuitive gameplay.

Do I need a game master to supervise the game?

All of our games have an intuitive, linear gameplay.

No master is needed to guide the game.

I have a large group I want to prepare the game for. How many can play the game at once?

What we love about our games is the versatility.

Have a large group? Split it into small teams (we suggest up to five, but it's totally up to you).

Print a set of materials for each group, and you're good to go!

If I set up the game, will it spoil the game for me?

Setting up the game does not spoil the game in any way!

Feel free to join the game, as you're in for some great fun!

I have locks, chests, and props on hand. Can I integrate them into the experience?

Adding extra layers of complexity is always a nice touch!

All our games allow adding props, numeric locks and chests.

But as all our games are designed to be self-contained, you don't need any additional props or equipment to play.

But if you have them, you can certainly use them to make the game more fun and exciting!

Do I need to use card stock for printing?

All our games are designed for regular printing paper.

How do I download the game?

Does the game end after 90 minutes?

Unlike real-life escape rooms, printable escape rooms are not time-limited.

You can take as long as you need to complete the game.

This means you can play at your own pace, take breaks if you need to, and come back to the game whenever you're ready.

Not the best.

The game sets up a really promising murder mystery with an intriguing premise and strong visuals, but the story quickly falls apart. The mystery is full of leaps in logic, and by the end, one of the main mysteries isn’t even given a clear resolution. It feels unfinished and frustrating rather than satisfying. Despite the good presentation, the resolution drags the whole experience down. I wouldn’t recommend it.

In Murder at the Crimson Asylum, the story threads are intentionally tied to small visual details and cross-references on the evidence. If even one of those gets missed, the ending can feel like a leap instead of a deduction.

Thoroughly disappointed in this game! For $20, the graphics are great but not worth it. The game was very confusing, and the solution is impossible to get. Was expecting a better experience for the money...

Jan 2025: Bought this as a gift, printed it on nice paper, cut it out, had tons of fun trying to figure stuff out, but we couldn't 100% figure it out. After trying all the hints, we realized that we did get all the intel we should need. When reading the conclusion, it unfortunately jumped to conclusions, but mainly did not answer one of the biggest questions for solving the mystery/murder. This was very dissapointing...

Haven't finish playing the game

I haven't finished playing the game, but so far so good. I'm enjoying it.

It was a lovely experience but the ending let us all down, the resolution for the game felt like it was put in last minute, it really didn't make sense , the evidence leading to what the solution was, was minimal and with no background.

Puzzle #1 we were able to figure out.

Puzzle #1 we were able to figure out. Puzzle #2 though was more difficult for us. Until we understood the position of the cube sides did the solution make sense. All the clues where available for us, we just didn't see it at first. I can see how the game designers put a lot of effort and thought into each puzzle.
