Why we're obsessed with DIY Escape Rooms

We started making escape rooms for each other to play at home, and now we've designed over 100!

Before MysteryLocks was even an idea, we discovered escape room games in all possible formats. When we ran out of games to play, we started creating our own.

Solving escape room puzzles using things we found around the house, we had hours of fun! So we want you to feel the same thrill without leaving your home.

We Have Answers.

Creating an escape room at home sounds too good to be true.

Got another question?

I never played a real Escape Room. Will I be able to play?

You don't need any prior experience to play an escape room at home.

Each game includes instructions and answer sheets, as well as an intuitive gameplay.

Do I need a game master to supervise the game?

All of our games have an intuitive, linear gameplay.

No master is needed to guide the game.

I have a large group I want to prepare the game for. How many can play the game at once?

What we love about our games is the versatility.

Have a large group? Split it into small teams (we suggest up to five, but it's totally up to you).

Print a set of materials for each group, and you're good to go!

If I set up the game, will it spoil the game for me?

Setting up the game does not spoil the game in any way!

Feel free to join the game, as you're in for some great fun!

I have locks, chests, and props on hand. Can I integrate them into the experience?

Adding extra layers of complexity is always a nice touch!

All our games allow adding props, numeric locks and chests.

But as all our games are designed to be self-contained, you don't need any additional props or equipment to play.

But if you have them, you can certainly use them to make the game more fun and exciting!

Do I need to use card stock for printing?

All our games are designed for regular printing paper.

Want to go the extra mile to create a higher quality experience? Printing on card stock definitely offer the games a great look and feel!

How do I download the game?

Right on the order completion page you receive the download links for the files instantly.

To keep them safe, a copy of the download links is also delivered to your email.

Does the game end after 60 minutes?

Unlike real-life escape rooms, printable escape rooms are not time-limited.

You can take as long as you need to complete the game.

This means you can play at your own pace, take breaks if you need to, and come back to the game whenever you're ready.

Other stores do not offer refunds for digital items. What if I don't like the game?

We're confident we provide some of the most complex games you can get online.

Maybe your first try was not successful? We offer a 100% Satisfaction Guarantee that includes a free personalised replacement or full refund.

Customers praised this printable escape room for being "fun and challenging" with "imaginative puzzles." Most groups enjoyed the experience, though some found certain puzzles (especially the gloves) difficult to solve. Setup requires printing and cutting materials. While instructions could be clearer and some puzzle elements need precise cutting, families appreciated the cheat sheet and responsive seller support.

  • Everyone loved it! Great fun with sufficient difficulty to keep adults happy!
  • Quick download and excellent materials. The kids loved it!
  • It was perfect! Challenging but not impossible, took a little more than an hour.

We did this for our kids to reveal their Christmas trip! It was fun. We had 6 of them working on it and found it a lot easier to print two copies so they could all see and participate.

Quick download and excellent materials. The pictures were high resolution and the guide was easy to follow. Followed the scavenger hunt/escape path and the kids loved it. Used it to lead the kids to Christmas presents so they were a bit impatient but powered through and solved it :) Highly recommend!

I surprised my 14 year old son with this challenge on Christmas Eve versus our usual tradition of just letting him open one Chistmas gift. His old Elf on the Shelf made a appearance and told him he needed his help and he would be rewarded if he could "save Christmas". He and my dad had a grand time working through the clues. I did give them the occasional hint to keep it fun and moving at a good pace. It took a couple of hours but he loved it and was super engaged the entire time! At the end, his gift was a new robe but I put the Polar Express "first gift of Christmas bell" in the pocket (a scene from our favorite Christmas movie). When he reached in his pocket to take it out he also found a $100 bill. It was all quite magical.

This was the perfect gift! I usually give my adult sons and their wives lottery tickets as part of their gifts…. This year we had them solve the sant kidnapping in order to get their tickets! Each piece of the puzzle they cracked we gave them some cards. The person who solved the clue for each stage also got their own lottery ticket! It was fun and turned competitive really quick! I will be doing this again next year.

Ordered this for my 17 and 24 year old to play before getting them their presents. I’m the lover of escape rooms but they worked together and I think enjoyed it. Overall it was fun and challenging however there were two critical puzzle elements that didn’t work as expected. I reached out to the shop owner on Christmas, not expecting a reply since it was Christmas and they responded! Stellar service. I highly recommend this seller and product and would order again.

Addicted! Santa, so glad you went missing, because we loved finding you! This one was a bit advanced for my 9yr old but there were still a few he could do all by himself. My 11yr old is the one who can work for a long time on just one puzzle without the frustration.. he spent the time, found the clues, and felt so proud at the end when we found Santa!
The nutcracker puzzle was the kid’s favorite, and I loved the key matching. There was a number I couldn’t understand at all. The candle measuring. Even with the directions. It was way beyond me. So we skipped that one. Which there could be more explanations for that one, but just a small thing. Maybe you will get it, and have a bonus high five from me when you do!
I have bought so many of these mystery locks! And I will buy some more, because they are awesome!

We could not get the gloves to go together to reveal the clue at all. The password we got at the end matched the password printed in materials but when entered on phone it said incorrect every time. The clues were hard but everyone had a great time playing.

This was a tough puzzle for 9-14 year olds. Once the realized they could divide out the puzzles it helped. Still struggling to figure one out myself!!

I ordered this downloadable/printable game to do with my family for Christmas Day. We loved it!! So creative and challenging! I’m not sure that I could ever come up with the details that have been added but it was great! I laminated the game and put each new puzzle into an envelope to make it more “official” and durable. I will actually pass it on to someone else so that it can be enjoyed again! I would consider purchasing this as a monthly subscription if it was available! Seller should def think about doing something like that! Great game!

We bought this puzzle for our youth Christmas Party and the students had tons of fun. Some of it was really challenging and we assisted in those challenging moments. The seller was great and although we had no issues, I believe they would offer help if anyone were to need it. We were pleased with our purchase. Initially giving this a 4 star only because it seemed to be really difficult for some of the students and without help they would have not been able to solve the mystery within our hour and a half together as a group. We had 12 youth in attendance and broke them up into groups of 4 at each table. We chose to not give them a file of the whole puzzle due to some confusing factors. Instead, we handed them the next puzzle after completing each one at a time to help steer away from confusion. All in all, everything was great!

Definitely recommended!!!

It took a little bit to organize it but let me tell you, it was a real hit! It was well thought out and the adults loved the challenge and had a great time! Thank you for this!

Thank you so much for sharing your experience, Cynthia! We're happy this was a hit at your party. We have so many fun adventures, so we can't wait to have you back!

Our Girl Scout troop wanted to do an escape room for their holiday party, and I found this one. They are all 9, and I thought since they would be working in teams that the 11 and up age category might still be okay, but all of them found it too challenging. I really appreciated having the "cheat sheet" to reference when they asked me for their many, many hints or help. The puzzles were all really unique and well made. I did cut out everything ahead of time, but make sure to bring scissors with you even if you do complete this step ahead of time. The only thing that would have helped would have been a supply list because we needed one more thing in addition to scissors, but we made it work!

Great family fun

Great fun. The puzzles were very imaginative and well-thought. We had a bit of a challenge with a couple of them, since depending on how you cut the paper pieces and how you place them, you may get different results. For the final code check, I would find it extremely useful to be able to know which puzzle is wrong, instead of having to go through all of them.

Great!

This game was definitely challenging but fun for all! Teens and adults.

Thanks, Joy! We're so glad you liked it! :)

Not recommended at all!

I did not like anything about it. It was supposed to be our big game at Christmas and no one could figure it out! Not the actual mystery but how to even start it. I was on vacation out of town before Christmas and thought I had this base covered. I got home to find I had to print hundreds of pages in color to even set up to play the game for 4 groups. Then as I started to look through it there was no clear indication of how anyone was supposed to even start to know what to do. I tried to reach out and got a canned response of "there was an instruction pack"-um yup , it made no sense. My daughter in law tried to figure out how to get it set up to actually play (and she does escape rooms all the time) she had no idea-my 33 yr old niece then went in back and tried to figure it out so we could possibly still have a game -no way. Took it to work and had my co-workers try to figure it out and they all came to the conclusion it was lame and a waste of money!

Thanks for your feedback, Jayne! We understand the setup might seem overwhelming, but starting the game is simpler than it looks. :)

There are not hundreds of pages to print to play the game. For such issues, we label the printing details in the product descriptions.

Your first message on December 11 didn’t mention the game title, so we responded promptly but didn’t hear back until December 23. We replied within 30 minutes, clarifying that the intro letter explains the game start. Unfortunately, we never received a response. Not mentioning a 'hello', 'thank you' or 'Merry Christmas'.

We’re here to help, but cooperation is key. Thousands of players enjoy this game yearly, and we’re confident you would too! If you’d like to give us another try, your next adventure is on us—we’d love to help find the perfect fit for you. :)

A very positive experience.

The printed materials were good quality. Two of our teams complained about the colours being being different, purple in puzzle was pink on the printout. The teams would have preferred to get some feedback from the website earlier, rather than all at the end of the game. The winning team is pretty happy but the other team are less so :) The teams found it too long at 90 minutes. All in all, a fun experience.

Thanks for the feedback, Wendy! We'll keep this in mind to adjust the game accordingly. Can't wait to have you back! :)

Mostly good, but...

We didn’t like the gloves that were a clue. It was really had to figure them out even knowing how they were placed together. We liked the Heist on the Christmas Express much better

Thanks for the feedback, Debbie! The gloves puzzle can be a bit tricky, but shining a little light from behind helps a lot. We'll definitely keep this in mind for future games!

This game was fun to play at Christmas. There were some clues (not spoiling) that required a few hints from me but the family had fun playing it!

This was so much fun watching my teenagers do this escape room. Took them longer than most but it was a blast. I printed the gloves on clear tattoo paper so the letter would be easily seen. The regular paper made it hard to figure out the clue. Other than that, such a fun game.

A
Amy

This was not great. There were no instructions and many of the puzzles were almost impossible to solve. In one you have to hold two pieces of paper up to the light to get the answer. Only our paper and print quality were too high. It didn't work at all. Maybe if everyone participating had lots of experience in these kind of printable escape rooms we would have enjoyed it more. The graphics are lovely, and the story if fun. The puzzles seem tricky for no logical reason.

Awesome Escape Room!

I did this escape room with my 11th grade class. They loved it!
I teach English as a foreign language. They’re 20 in total, and I had to separate them into groups of 5.
I wish there could have been a little bit more of storyline, in order to become a more immersive experience. So, I advise others to maybe create a storyline or elaborate further on the storyline given.
Since this was something new to my students, I decided to implement a hint/clue system. I would add 5 minutes to their time for each clue they asked for. That definitely added to the suspense element when finding out who had won!
Overall, it was a really nice game, and I’d do it again! :)
